Forging Distortion During Heat Treatment

Distortion during heat treatment is largely predictable, and most of it originates in design and prior processing rather than in the quench tank everyone blames.

Practical Prevention

Stress relieve before finish machining. Use a gentler quench — polymer or oil rather than water — where hardenability allows. Design uniform sections and generous transitions. Support long parts properly during heating, and straighten and stress relieve after hardening where distortion cannot be avoided.
