IS 2062: Indian Structural Steel Standard
IS 2062 is the workhorse structural steel standard in India, covering the plate and section grades used across construction and fabrication. Forging buyers meet it constantly, and it is worth knowing where it fits and where it does not.
IS 2062 is the Indian standard for hot rolled structural steel, with grades E250 to E450 named after their minimum yield strength in MPa and quality subgrades A, BR, B0 and C defining impact toughness. It suits structural forgings but not fatigue-critical or heat-treated components.

Grades and Yield Strength
The designation states the minimum yield strength in MPa — E250, E300, E350, E410 and E450. Each has quality subgrades A, BR, B0 and C differing in impact toughness requirements and deoxidation practice.
- E250: 250 MPa minimum yield
- E350, E410, E450: higher strength
- Subgrades A, BR, B0, C
- Subgrade sets impact requirements
Where It Suits Forging
IS 2062 grades are weldable structural steels, appropriate for forged brackets, base plates, non-critical mounts and fabricated assemblies. They are not appropriate for fatigue-critical, wear-critical or heat-treated components, which need EN8, EN19 or a case hardening grade.
The Substitution Risk
IS 2062 is inexpensive and widely available, which makes it a common quiet substitution in low-cost supply chains. Spectro verification of every incoming heat lot is what catches it before the part reaches a customer's assembly line.

Questions Answered
What is IS 2062 E250 steel?
+
A weldable structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 250 MPa, widely used in Indian construction and fabrication.
Can IS 2062 be used for forgings?
+
For non-critical structural forgings, yes. For fatigue-loaded, wear-critical or heat-treated components, use EN8, EN19 or a case hardening grade instead.
What do subgrades A, BR and B0 mean?
+
They define impact toughness requirements and deoxidation practice, with B0 and C offering verified low-temperature toughness.
How do you prevent grade substitution?
+
Every incoming heat lot is spectro tested against the mill certificate before it enters production.
