Closed Die Forging vs Cold Forming
Closed die forging and cold forming can produce superficially similar parts, and the choice between them is settled almost entirely by two things: how complex the shape is, and how many you need.
Closed die forging fills complex ribbed and forked geometry with hot metal and is economical from a few hundred pieces. Cold forming holds tighter ±0.1 mm tolerances with a machining-free finish, but is limited to simpler axisymmetric shapes in ductile grades and needs volumes above roughly 10,000 pieces.

Geometry Sets the Boundary
Closed die forging fills ribs, forks, bosses and deep webs because hot metal flows freely. Cold forming is confined to simpler, largely axisymmetric geometry — heads, shanks, collars, splines — because room-temperature steel resists deformation and tooling loads climb steeply.

Tolerance and Finish
Cold formed parts hold about ±0.1 mm with a bright surface that frequently needs no machining. Closed die hot forgings hold a looser class and carry scale, so a machining envelope is planned into the design.
Volume Decides the Economics
Cold forming tooling costs more and lasts longer, with cycle times in seconds; it pays above roughly 10,000 pieces on suitable geometry. Closed die forging is economical from a few hundred pieces and stays the only viable route for genuinely complex parts at any volume.
