Quench Crack
Quench cracks usually trace back to design — a sharp corner, an abrupt section change — rather than to the heat treater who happened to be holding the part when it cracked.
A quench crack forms when the stresses generated during rapid cooling exceed the material's strength. The surface transforms and contracts while the core is still hot, and the resulting tensile stress tears the part.

Where They Start
