A bush is a sacrificial wear component protecting a more expensive part. Its job is to wear out predictably, on schedule, and be replaced cheaply.
Forged bushes are sacrificial wear components designed to wear before the pin or housing they protect. They are specified softer than the mating pin, machined to H7 or H8 bore tolerance, and supplied with grease grooves and cross-holes for lubrication.

Wearing Predictably by Design
The bush should wear rather than the housing or pin. That means selecting hardness deliberately lower than the mating pin, providing grease grooves that actually distribute lubricant, and machining bore tolerance so clearance starts at design value.

Matched Sets
Pin and bush supplied as a clearance-matched set removes the field problem of mixing components from different suppliers with different tolerances. Where machines are rebuilt regularly, matched sets measurably reduce reassembly time.

Why should the bush be the part that wears?
Because it is far cheaper and faster to replace than a machined housing or a hardened pin. Making it the sacrificial component is a deliberate maintenance decision.
What causes bushes to fail early?
Inadequate lubrication reaching the bearing surface, contamination entering the clearance, incorrect fit, or a bush harder than the pin so wear transfers to the wrong part.
Can you supply bronze-lined steel bushes?
