Open Die Forging vs Ring Rolling
Both routes make rings, and they make metallurgically different rings. Boring a ring from an open die forged disc cuts across the grain; rolling it draws grain around the circumference. For rotating parts that distinction decides service life.
Ring rolling draws grain continuously around a ring's circumference, aligned with hoop stress, and wastes far less material than boring a ring from a solid forged disc, which leaves mixed grain orientation and turns the centre into swarf. Boring suits only one-offs and small rings.

Grain Orientation Decides Duty
A ring bored from a solid forged disc has grain running across the wall in some places and along it in others. A rolled ring has grain drawn continuously around the circumference — aligned with hoop stress everywhere. Under rotating load that alignment is the whole point.

Material Waste
Boring a ring from a disc turns the entire centre into swarf. On a 600 mm ring with a 400 mm bore, that is most of the starting weight. Ring rolling pierces and expands instead, so material utilisation is far higher.
When Boring Still Makes Sense
For one or two pieces, or for small rings where rolling setup is disproportionate, boring from a forged disc is faster and avoids setup cost. For production quantities and larger diameters, rolling wins clearly.
