Heat Number

Heat number traceability is the backbone of manufacturing quality. Without it, a certificate is a piece of paper with no demonstrable connection to the part in your hand.

Short answer

A heat number identifies a specific batch of steel from a single melt at the mill. Every mechanical and chemical property on the certificate applies to that heat, and the number is how a finished part is traced back to it.

Definition

01

What It Guarantees

All material from one heat has the same chemistry and, subject to processing, comparable properties. Segregating material by heat number and carrying that number through every operation is what makes a certificate meaningful.

02

Carrying It Through Production

The number is recorded at billet cutting, carried on route cards through forging and heat treatment, marked on parts where specified, and printed on the certificate. If a problem emerges years later, that chain identifies exactly which parts are affected.

FAQ

Questions Answered

What is a heat number?

+

An identifier for a specific batch of steel from a single melt, to which all certificate properties apply.

Why does heat number traceability matter?

+

It is what connects a certificate to the physical part, and what scopes a recall or failure investigation years later.

Do you maintain heat number traceability?

+

Yes, from incoming billet through forging, heat treatment, machining and packing, recorded at every stage.
