Steel Grade Equivalents Lookup
The same steel carries four different names depending on which standard the drawing was written to. This lookup cross-references them — and flags the important caveat that equivalents are close matches, not identities.
The same steel carries different designations across standards: EN19 in British and Indian practice equals 42CrMo4 in DIN, AISI 4140 in American and SCM440 in Japanese. These are close matches rather than identities, since composition ranges differ slightly between standards.

Equivalents are close matches, not identities — composition ranges differ slightly between standards. Always confirm against the mill certificate before substituting a grade.
Why One Steel Has Four Names
EN designations came from British practice and remain standard in India. DIN and EN 10027 numbers dominate European drawings. AISI/SAE numbers are American. JIS designations are Japanese. All four can describe substantially the same alloy.
- EN: British and Indian practice
- DIN / EN 10027: European
- AISI / SAE: American
- JIS: Japanese
Equivalent Does Not Mean Identical
Composition ranges differ slightly between standards — a few hundredths of a percent on carbon, or a different residual element limit. For most applications that is immaterial; for critical or code work it is not, and substitution should be approved by the design authority.
Verifying What You Actually Received
Whatever the paperwork says, spectro analysis on the incoming heat lot is what confirms the grade. We test every lot before it enters production, which is how substitution gets caught at the gate rather than at the customer's assembly line.

Questions Answered
What is 42CrMo4 equivalent to?
+
EN19 in British and Indian practice, AISI 4140 in American, SCM440 in Japanese — all chromium-molybdenum steels of substantially the same composition.
Are equivalent grades interchangeable?
+
For most applications yes, but composition ranges differ slightly. Critical and code work should have substitutions approved by the design authority.
How do I confirm which grade I received?
+
Spectro analysis of the material. We test every incoming heat lot against the mill certificate before production.
Can you source a specific standard's grade?
+
Yes, we procure against mill test certificates to the standard your drawing cites.
