Forging Quality Standards: ISO 9001, IATF 16949 and Beyond

Certification logos on a supplier's website mean little on their own. What matters is what each standard actually requires of the process, and whether the supplier's daily practice reflects it.

ISO 9001 and IATF 16949

ISO 9001 requires a documented, consistently applied quality system. IATF 16949 adds automotive-specific requirements — PPAP, PFMEA, control plans, capability studies and defect prevention rather than detection.

  • Documented, audited processes
  • PPAP and control plans (IATF)
  • Capability studies on key features
  • Prevention over inspection

EN 10204 Certificate Types

A 2.1 certificate is the maker's declaration of compliance; 2.2 adds non-specific test results; 3.1 gives actual test results on the delivered material, validated by the manufacturer's independent inspector; 3.2 adds third-party validation. Export orders normally require 3.1 as a minimum.

What to Actually Verify

Ask a supplier to show a traceability trail on a real past batch — heat number, furnace chart, inspection record. A supplier who cannot produce that in minutes does not have a working system, whatever certificates are framed on the wall.

FAQ

Questions Answered

What is an EN 10204 3.1 certificate?

+

A material test certificate showing actual test results on the delivered material, validated by the manufacturer's independent inspection function. It is the export standard.

What does IATF 16949 add over ISO 9001?

+

Automotive-specific requirements — PPAP, PFMEA, control plans, capability studies and a prevention-focused approach to defects.

How do I verify a supplier's quality system?

+

Ask them to produce the complete traceability trail for a past batch on the spot. A working system produces it in minutes.

Do you supply PPAP documentation?

+

Yes, PPAP level 3 packages including control plan, PFMEA, process flow and dimensional results.
