Forging is better for strength, fatigue life and soundness. Casting is better for complex geometry and often for cost. Anyone who tells you one is universally superior is selling that process.

Where Casting Genuinely Wins

Internal passages, thin complex walls, intricate external detail and large one-piece housings. An engine block or a pump volute cannot sensibly be forged, and at low volumes casting tooling is far cheaper.

How to Decide

Identify the governing failure mode. If it is fatigue, impact or leakage, forge. If the part is geometrically complex and moderately loaded, cast. If quantities are tiny, machine. The honest answer depends on the part, not on the supplier.

Why do some standards prohibit cast components?

Because interconnected porosity in a casting can form a leak path through a pressure boundary, and randomly oriented grain gives lower and less predictable fatigue performance.

Is cast iron stronger than forged steel?

No. Cast iron is strong in compression but brittle in tension and impact. Forged steel is substantially stronger and tougher in every loading mode that matters structurally.

Which is cheaper, forging or casting?

Casting is usually cheaper for complex shapes at low volume. Forging often wins at higher volumes with simpler geometry, especially when machining content is high.
