Forged Eye Bolts

An eye bolt carries a load directly overhead through a threaded connection and a formed eye. Both must be forged, because a machined eye has cut grain exactly where the load pulls hardest.

Short answer

Forged eye bolts are lifting components in which grain flow wraps around the eye curvature, giving tensile strength no machined or bent-bar equivalent matches. They are 100% proof load tested, magnetic particle inspected and marked with their working load limit.

Why the Eye Must Be Forged

The eye is loaded in tension across a curved section. Forging wraps grain around that curve; machining or bending bar leaves fibre ends exposed at the highest stress point. Standards for lifting hardware require forged construction for exactly this reason.

  • Grain wraps the eye curvature
  • No exposed fibre ends
  • Ductile deformation warns of overload
  • 100% proof load tested

Collared and Angular Loading

A plain eye bolt is rated only for in-line vertical lifting. A collared eye bolt seats against the surface and tolerates limited angular loading. Using a plain eye bolt at an angle can reduce its capacity by 75%, which is why the collar type must be specified deliberately.

People also ask

What is the difference between a plain and collared eye bolt?

A plain eye bolt is rated only for in-line vertical lifting. A collared eye bolt seats against the mounting surface and tolerates limited angular loading, though at a reduced working load limit.

Why can't eye bolts be machined from bar?

Machining severs the grain across the eye where tensile load peaks. Forging wraps continuous fibre around the curve, which is why lifting standards require forged construction.

What working load limits do you supply?

From 0.2 tonne to 15 tonne across thread sizes M8 to M48, each proof tested and permanently marked.

FAQ

Questions Answered

Are eye bolts proof load tested?

+

Yes, 100% proof loaded to the applicable standard, then magnetic particle inspected and dimensionally verified before certification.

Can eye bolts be used at an angle?

+

Only collared types, and with a reduced working load limit. Plain eye bolts are for in-line vertical lifting only.

What thread sizes do you make?

+

M8 to M48 metric plus imperial equivalents, gauge verified.
