Forging Drawing Checklist

An incomplete drawing does not stop production; it transfers the decision to whoever is holding the part. These are the items that, left unstated, get decided by someone other than the designer.

Short answer

A complete forging drawing states material grade with standard and delivery condition, hardness band with measurement location, tolerance standard and class, machined surfaces with allowance, NDT method with acceptance class, marking requirements and certification type.

Material
Grade, standard, delivery condition
Hardness
Band plus measurement location
Tolerances
Standard and class named
Machining
Surfaces marked, allowance stated
NDT
Method and acceptance class
Certification
Type required, e.g. 3.1

Key takeaways

  • Anything left unstated is decided by whoever holds the part, not by the designer.
  • “42CrMo4” without a condition suffix leaves heat treatment unspecified.
  • “UT per ASTM A388” names a method with no pass criterion — always add the acceptance class.
  • Hardness needs a measurement location, because it varies across a forged section.

Forging Drawing Checklist at a glance

Quotable facts from Avadh Techno Forge, Gundasara, Gondal, Rajkot.

  • Material: Grade, standard, delivery condition
  • Hardness: Band plus measurement location
  • Tolerances: Standard and class named
  • Machining: Surfaces marked, allowance stated
  • NDT: Method and acceptance class
  • Certification: Type required, e.g. 3.1
01

Material and Condition

Grade, standard reference and delivery condition. Stating '42CrMo4' without '+QT' leaves the heat treatment condition unspecified. State the hardness band, and where it is to be measured, because a hardness measured on a boss differs from one measured on a web.

  • Grade with standard reference
  • Delivery condition (+QT, +N)
  • Hardness band and location
  • Any property targets
02

Tolerances and Allowance

Name the tolerance standard and class — IS 3469 or DIN 7526, grade E or F. Mark which surfaces are machined and state the machining allowance. Distinguish clearly between as-forged and finished dimensions, because mixing them on one view causes real confusion.

03

Testing, Marking and Acceptance

State the NDT required and its acceptance class — 'UT per ASTM A388' with no class is a method without a pass criterion. Specify marking content and location, and state the certification type required, typically EN 10204 3.1.

FAQ

Questions Answered

What is most often missing from forging drawings?

+

The tolerance class, the NDT acceptance criteria, and where hardness is to be measured. Each gets decided by someone other than the designer when left blank.

Why state where hardness is measured?

+

Hardness varies across a forged section. A measurement on a heavy boss will differ from one on a thin web, so the location must be defined.

Is 'UT per ASTM A388' sufficient?

+

No. A388 defines the method, not the acceptance criteria. State the acceptance class as well.

Yes, free with your enquiry. We flag unachievable tolerances and missing information before tooling is cut.
