SS 316 vs Duplex Stainless

Duplex delivers roughly double the yield strength of 316 alongside far better chloride stress corrosion resistance. The catch is that duplex punishes careless processing in a way austenitic stainless does not.

Short answer

Strength Buys Weight Reduction

Duplex yields around 450 MPa against 316's 205 MPa, so a pressure-retaining component can use thinner walls for the same duty. On large offshore assemblies that weight saving often outweighs the higher price per kilogram.

Stress Corrosion Cracking

Austenitic grades including 316 are vulnerable to chloride stress corrosion cracking under tensile stress at elevated temperature. Duplex's ferrite phase resists it strongly, which is the deciding factor in hot chloride service.

The Processing Penalty

Duplex must be forged and solution annealed within controlled temperature ranges. Stray outside them and brittle sigma phase forms, destroying toughness invisibly. It is not a grade to give to a shop without temperature control and verification.
