Warm Forging

Warm forging occupies the middle ground: hot enough to cut flow stress and forming loads substantially, cool enough to avoid heavy scale and thermal shrinkage error. For gear blanks and transmission parts it delivers near-net accuracy that neither pure route achieves economically.

The 750–950°C Window

Below the scaling threshold but above the cold-forming load limit, warm forging cuts press tonnage by roughly half compared with cold work while holding tolerances two to three times tighter than hot forging. Billet temperature is held within a ±20°C band because the process window itself is narrow.

Ideal for Toothed and Splined Blanks

Gear blanks, sprockets, clutch hubs and splined shafts benefit most: teeth and splines can be formed close to final profile, leaving only a finishing cut. Grain flow follows the tooth contour, which measurably improves root bending fatigue against cut-from-solid gears.

Material and Surface Benefits

Scale formation is minimal, so surfaces stay clean and dimensional loss is small. Because deformation happens below recrystallisation, a degree of strain hardening is retained, letting some parts skip a subsequent hardening operation altogether.

Why choose warm forging over hot forging?

When the drawing demands tighter tolerance and a cleaner surface than hot forging gives, but the geometry is too complex or the alloy too strong for cold forming.

Does warm forging need lubricant?

Yes — graphite or synthetic die lubricant is applied every stroke to control friction and protect die life at these temperatures.

Can gear teeth be finished directly by warm forging?

Near-net teeth can be formed with a small finishing allowance. A light hobbing or grinding pass then achieves the required DIN quality class.
