ASME B16.11: Forged Socket Weld & Threaded Fittings
ASME B16.11 governs forged fittings for small-bore high-pressure piping — the elbows, tees, couplings and unions that carry the highest pressures in a plant. Its socket dimensions encode a detail installers routinely get wrong: the weld gap.
ASME B16.11 covers forged socket weld and threaded pipe fittings from 1/8 to 4 inch in classes 3000, 6000 and 9000. The class corresponds approximately to pipe schedule 80, 160 and XXS respectively, and socket welds require roughly a 1.6 mm gap before welding.

Classes 3000, 6000 and 9000
Class ratings reflect wall thickness relative to pipe schedule — roughly schedule 80 for class 3000, schedule 160 for 6000, and XXS for 9000. The class must match the connecting pipe schedule, or the joint has a built-in weak point.

The 1.6 mm Weld Gap
Socket depth is dimensioned so the pipe bottoms out, then is withdrawn about 1.6 mm before welding. That gap absorbs thermal expansion during welding; without it, the weld root cracks. Socket depth tolerance therefore matters more than it appears.
Threads and Sealing
Threaded fittings use NPT taper threads, gauge verified with ring and plug gauges. Thread sealing depends on flank interference, not on the tape wrapped around it, so thread form accuracy is a functional requirement rather than a cosmetic one.
