Upset Forging

Upset forging compresses a heated bar along its axis so the diameter grows locally, forming a head, collar or flange without removing a gram of material. The grain wraps around the upset section, giving heads that resist shearing far better than machined equivalents.

Forming Heads Without Waste

Machining a head from bar means turning away the whole shank diameter along its length. Upsetting instead gathers material where it is wanted. On a typical flanged shaft this cuts raw material consumption by 30–50% and removes hours of turning per hundred pieces.

Typical Upset Forged Products

Bolt and stud heads, axle shafts with integral flanges, valve stems, tie rods, anchor bolts, pipe couplings and drill collars. Anything that starts life as round bar and needs a larger diameter at one end is a candidate.

Design Rules That Keep Upsetting Sound

Unsupported billet length should stay under three diameters per blow, or the bar buckles instead of upsetting. Longer gathers are produced in multiple stages with progressive dies — a sequence our tool room designs alongside the part.

Is upset forging suitable for stainless steel?

Yes, with adjusted temperature and lubrication. SS 304 and SS 316 upset well when finish temperature is properly controlled.
