Forged Connecting Rods

A connecting rod converts every combustion event into rotation while surviving tensile snap loads at the top of each stroke. Forging is the only economical route that puts continuous grain flow along the shank, which is why cast rods are confined to low-output engines.

Loading a Con Rod Actually Sees

Compression on the power stroke, tension at TDC on the exhaust stroke, and bending from side thrust — reversed millions of times. Fatigue, not static strength, sets the design, and forged grain flow along the I-section shank is what delivers the fatigue life.

  • Reversed tensile-compressive fatigue
  • Continuous grain flow along the shank
  • Big-end and small-end bore concentricity
  • Weight-matched sets

Materials and Heat Treatment

20MnCr5 for case-hardened applications, 42CrMo4 and EN19 quenched and tempered for higher-output diesels. Hardness bands are held within ±20 BHN across a batch so that weight-matched sets behave identically in a multi-cylinder engine.

Machining and Weight Matching

Big-end and small-end bores are machined concentric with the shank axis, and each rod is weighed and classified so a set for one engine falls within the customer's specified gram band. Magnetic particle inspection is standard on safety-critical rod production.

People also ask

How closely can connecting rods be weight matched?

Rods are weighed after machining and grouped so a set for a multi-cylinder engine falls inside your specified gram tolerance.

Why do connecting rods fail?

Fatigue from reversed tensile and compressive loading, usually initiating at the shank or at the big-end bolt seat, which is why grain flow along the shank matters.

FAQ

Questions Answered

Why are connecting rods forged rather than cast?

+

Because the reversed fatigue loading demands continuous grain flow. A cast rod carries porosity and interrupted grain, which becomes a crack initiation site under millions of cycles.

Can you weight-match rods into sets?

+

Yes. Rods are weighed after machining and grouped so that a set for a multi-cylinder engine falls inside your specified gram tolerance.

Do you supply rods with bushes fitted?

+

Small-end bush fitting and honing can be included in the scope on request.

What is the minimum order?

+

500 pieces on a new die, 200 on an existing one.
