Annealing and Normalising
Annealing softens fully for maximum machinability. Normalising heats above the critical temperature and air cools, refining grain and evening out the variation left by different cooling rates across a forged section — it is the default before machining.

Hardening and Tempering
Quenching produces hard, brittle martensite; tempering then trades some hardness for toughness. The tempering temperature is the control knob — it is chosen to land inside the customer's specified hardness band, and results are verified per batch.
Selective Hardening
When only a surface wears, harden only that surface. Induction hardening and carburising give a hard case over a tough core at lower cost and lower distortion risk than through-hardening the whole part in an alloy grade.

What is the difference between annealing and normalising?

Annealing cools slowly in the furnace for maximum softness; normalising air cools for a refined, uniform grain structure and slightly higher hardness.
Do all forgings need heat treatment?

Most do. Micro-alloyed grades are an exception — they develop properties on controlled cooling from forging heat.
How is hardness controlled to a band?

By setting the tempering temperature for the grade and section, then verifying hardness on every batch.
Does heat treatment cause distortion?

Quenching can. Selective hardening, polymer quenching and post-hardening straightening all manage it.
