NDT for Forgings: Methods and When to Use Them
Each NDT method finds a different class of defect. Specifying the wrong one gives false confidence: dye penetrant will never find an internal burst, and ultrasonic will not reliably catch a tight surface crack.

Ultrasonic Testing: Internal Defects
Sound waves reflect off internal discontinuities — bursts, laps below the surface, large inclusions. It is the only practical way to inspect the interior of a heavy section, which is why ASTM A388 UT is standard on critical forgings.

Magnetic Particle and Dye Penetrant
MPI reveals surface and near-surface cracks on ferromagnetic parts, including tight fatigue cracks. Dye penetrant covers stainless and non-magnetic materials but only finds defects open to the surface.
When to Specify Which
Safety-critical parts: MPI after final machining, plus UT on heavy sections. Pressure parts: UT plus surface method. General engineering: visual and hardness. Over-specifying NDT adds cost without adding safety when the failure mode does not warrant it.
